“Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel?” — Ezekiel 18:31 NLT
We often try to self-medicate our old lives, applying shallow remedies to a deep-seated ache, but God calls for a radical surgery. Our rebellion acts like a hardening of the heart tissue, turning the soft, rhythmic pulse of a loving heart into a cold, unyielding stone. To “find a new heart” is to admit that our current one is failing; it is an invitation to lay down on the operating table of the Almighty and surrender the very core of our being. Why cling to a dying organ when the Great Physician offers a transplant of eternal life?
This new spirit is signed in the blood of Jesus, whose own heart was pierced for our sake. On Calvary, His perfect heart stopped so that our stony hearts could beat again with the rhythm of heaven. He took our deadness into His tomb and left it there, rising to offer us a pulse that vibrates with His own resurrection power. We look to Him and let the warmth of His sacrifice melt the ice within us, replacing our rebellion with the gentle, steady beat of His undying love.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, take this heart of stone and give me a heart that beats for You. Replace my cold rebellion with a spirit that is soft, responsive, and alive in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
