“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10 NLT
To ask God to “create” is to use the word bara—the same word used when He spoke the stars into existence out of nothing. Our hearts are not just dirty; they are often empty, devoid of the holiness required to stand before Him. We need a creative miracle, a new genesis within the ribcage. A loyal spirit is one that no longer suffers from the erratic, fluttering arrhythmias of temptation, but beats with the steady, synchronized rhythm of devotion to the King.
This loyalty was perfectly modeled by Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, where His spirit remained loyal to the Father’s will even as His body sweat drops of blood. He stayed faithful to us when we were unfaithful to Him. By His Spirit, He now dwells within us, offering us His own loyalty and His own purity. When we feel our hearts failing, we lean into the One who was “loyal unto death,” trusting that He will finish the masterpiece He has started in our souls.
Prayer: Creator God, perform Your miracle in me today and fashion a spirit that is steadfast and true. Let my life be a reflection of the unwavering loyalty of my Savior, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
