The Initiative of Love

“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” — 1 John 4:10

Imagine a vast, silent chasm, carved by years of cold indifference and the jagged edges of our own rebellion. We stood on the far rim, empty-handed and hollow-chested, possessing nothing that could bridge the distance to the Holy. Yet, before we even looked across the divide, before a single cry for mercy left our lips, the Father moved. Love did not wait for an invitation; it was not a response to our goodness, but an overflowing of His own. He sent His Son into the shadow of our exile, a lamb walking willingly into the thorns to reclaim what was lost.

Let this truth shatter the mirror of our self-reliance. Real love is not a reward for our striving; it is the blood-stained bridge built while we were still turned away. May we be profoundly impacted by a love that seeks us out in the silence of our own inadequacy, and may it transform us into a people who no longer perform for affection, but rest in the finished work of Christ.

Prayer: Lord, help me to stop trying to earn what You have already given. Let Your initiative be the anchor of my soul today. I surrender my need to be “enough” and accept that You are everything. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
