“Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you.” — Zechariah 9:9
Zechariah wrote these words to a struggling community trying to rebuild the temple under the thumb of foreign empires. He promised a King who would end all war, yet this King wouldn’t arrive in a chariot of fire. By specifying that the King would arrive on a donkey—a beast of burden rather than a beast of battle—the prophet signaled a reign defined by humility and peace rather than brute force.
The King of the Universe enters the city with a quiet authority that disarms the proud and empowers the lowly. His arrival is a thunderous declaration that the reign of fear is over. Jesus invites us to join the shouting crowd and lay our pride like palm branches at His feet. We are called to welcome Him into the “city” of our hearts, letting the joy of His arrival wash away our anxieties, for our peace is secured forever by Jesus.
Prayer: Father God, I rejoice in the coming of my King. I open the gates of my heart and welcome Jesus to take His seat on the throne of my life. May my life be a shout of triumph to Your glory, and may I live in the peace of Your kingdom today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
