“Then Judas Iscariot… went to the leading priests and asked, ‘How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?’” — Matthew 26:14-15
The shadows of the moonlit garden are no darker than the secret chambers where a friend counts the cost of a Master’s life. The sound of thirty silver coins clinking together is a cold, metallic funeral knell, the price of a common slave traded for the Architect of the Stars. In this quiet act of treachery, the sacred is bartered for the secular, and the Bread of Life is sold for the crumbs of worldly security. It is a scene of chilling calculation, where the intimacy of a shared table is weaponized into a tool of destruction, and a kiss is prepared to act as a death warrant.
This betrayal, however, was the dark doorway through which our salvation had to pass. Jesus allowed Himself to be sold into the hands of men so that we could be bought out of the hand of death. He accepted the sting of the traitor’s kiss because He was focused on the hill of Golgotha, where He would pay the ransom for every soul that had ever wandered into the darkness. The silver of Judas is worthless compared to the treasure of the Cross, where our debt was canceled by a Savior who refused to betray us, even when it cost Him everything. Our freedom was purchased by the intentional, silent suffering of Jesus.
Prayer: Father, keep my heart from the subtle drift of compromise and the lure of worldly gain. Forgive me for the times I have prioritized my own security over my loyalty to Your Kingdom. Give me a spirit that is steadfast and a love that cannot be bought by the passing treasures of this earth. I choose to remain faithful to the One who was betrayed for my sake, my Lord Jesus. Amen.
