Breaking Disappointment with Bread

“As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.” — Luke 24:30-31

Two travelers walked a dusty road to Emmaus, their hearts heavy with the “what might have beens” of a crucified movement. They were talking about Jesus, yet they did not recognize Jesus walking right beside them. It wasn’t until the mundane act of breaking bread—a familiar, rhythmic gesture of fellowship—that the scales fell from their eyes. In the breaking of the bread, they saw the breaking of His body; in the blessing of the meal, they saw the blessing of His life. The Resurrection was not just a theological concept discussed on a walk; it was a Person sitting at their table.

Often, we walk our own roads of disappointment, so blinded by our expectations of how God “should” act that we miss His presence in the ordinary moments. We are invited to recognize Him in the breaking of our own lives and in the simple provisions of our daily bread. When our eyes are opened by the Spirit, the “burning hearts” within us find their fire again. We realize that He has been with us all along, guiding our steps and preparing our hearts for a full revelation of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the many times I have walked beside You without ever recognizing Your hand at work in my life. I ask that You would open the eyes of my heart today as I go about my daily routines and my common tasks. May every provision I receive and every trial I face become a moment of recognition where I see Your glory clearly. I want my life to be a continuous feast on the presence and the power of Jesus. Amen.
