Psalm 23 Day 7: Jehovah Shammah – My ever-Present Lord

Verse: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” (Psalm 23:4a)

The name Jehovah Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35) signifies “The Lord is There,” ensuring us that His presence is an inescapable reality regardless of our environment. This promise becomes our anchor when we enter the “valley of the shadow,” a narrow canyon where the walls are high and the sunlight rarely reaches the floor. It is a place of echoes, unseen dangers, and deep gloom.

But in the heart of this canyon, we find Jehovah Shammah—the God who is simply there. He does not shout encouragement from the rim of the canyon; He descends into the darkness with us. His presence is the light that the shadow cannot extinguish. Seeking Jehovah Shammah means practicing the awareness of God in our “dark nights of the soul.”

We recognize Him when a peace that passes understanding settles over us in a hospital room, a funeral home, or a lonely apartment. We encounter Him in the breath that comes when we thought we would suffocate from grief. Recognizing His presence changes the “valley” from a place of execution to a place of passage—we are walking through it, not staying in it, because He is holding our hand. No shadow is too dark to hide the abiding presence of Jehovah Shammah.

Prayer:  Jehovah Shammah, The Lord Who Is Always There, I lean into the truth that You are right here in the middle of this dark valley. I don’t need to see the way out as long as I can feel Your hand in mine. I choose to trust Your presence more than I trust my feelings of fear. Thank You for being my constant companion in the dark, Jehovah Shammah. Amen.
