Psalm 23 Day 9: Jehovah Nissi – My Banner of Victory

Verse: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” (Psalm 23:5)

The name Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15) proclaims “The Lord is My Banner,” the rallying point and victory sign for His people in the heat of battle. Here, the imagery shifts from a rugged trail to a royal banquet hall. Surprisingly, this feast isn’t held after the war is over, but right in the middle of it. While your enemies watch from the shadows, the Shepherd-King sets a table, declaring that their presence cannot interrupt His provision.

He anoints your head with oil—a gesture of high honor and healing that keeps the “flies” of distraction and harassment away. Your cup doesn’t just meet your need; it “overflows,” signaling a surplus of grace that mocks the scarcity the enemy tries to project. Seeking Jehovah Nissi means finding your identity in His victory rather than your struggle.

We recognize His banner when we find the strength to be joyful in a hostile environment or generous when we are under attack. We encounter Him in the “overflow” of peace that makes us wonder why we aren’t as worried as we “should” be. When the enemy shouts, Jehovah Nissi spreads a feast, proving that we are not just survivors, but honored guests of the King. Our head is held high by the anointing of Jehovah Nissi.

Prayer: Jehovah Nissi, My Banner of Victory, I thank You for the feast You provide even when I am surrounded by adversity. I receive Your anointing today to heal my weary mind and protect me from the stinging thoughts of the enemy. Let my life overflow with Your grace so that even my critics see Your goodness in me. I stand under Your banner today, Jehovah Nissi. Amen.
